Venetian Plaster

Venetian Plaster

Plaster is an old world technique that starts with lime stone rocks from rivers and quarries from Italy. Our techniques have been developed to give a multitude of different effects from suede to marble to stone. It is through our imagination where the elegant effects are created using hawks and trowels. Plaster effects can be used in several styles such as Old world, Tuscan, Contemporary and Traditional. Venetian plaster can be burnished, waxed and buffed for a mirror like finish. Venetian Plaster can also be completed using a sealer that will allow for a subtle finish. Both products will protect the Venetian Plaster from water and dirt. As you will see on our portfolio you will find finishes that you have never seen before. This is where we separate ourselves from our competitors. The finished results of transforming your Ceilings and walls with Venetian Plaster are simply and truly a beautiful look.

What is Venetian Plaster?

Venetian Plaster

As mentioned, this kind of plaster came from Italy, which is quite obvious because everything Venetian is inspired by the famous river city, Venice. The typical Venetian plaster is a mixture of plaster and marble dust. The special dust turns the hardened surface into something similar to marble. We recommend this technique because it's cheaper, better, and offers artistic freedom.

Venetian plastering often takes the place of projects that are too costly or too difficult. Having a wall or ceiling that's made out of real marble will cost an arm and a leg. Shaping a decorative column with marble -- although possible -- is very tedious. In this instance, plastering is the better solution. You get the look and feel of marble without the hefty price tag and without spending more time and effort than necessary.

Decorative Choices

Venetian Plaster

We mentioned that Venetian plastering offers artistic freedom. Just look at our portfolio and you'll see the variety of colors, textures, and effects that can be achieved with this technique. Of course, you can always have the faux finish of marble by using natural colors and textures. But for the more adventurous, we offer unique and customized finishes.

The plaster can be mixed with unique colors and materials to achieve a surface that can never be found elsewhere but your place. Getting a pearl-like or shell-looking surface is possible. Even a glow-in-the-dark ceiling can be achieved.

Usually, this technique produces a glossy finish with burnishing, waxing, and buffing. It can also be less fancy yet still gorgeous with sealer that produces a matte finish.

The design options we have at Picasso House Painting and Faux Finishes are only a fraction of the possible Venetian plaster finishes. This plastering technique doesn't just fit with a Venetian-inspired interior. Your indoor will look warm, stunning, and homey whether it's more of an old world, Tuscan, contemporary, or traditional.

Not an Ordinary Painting Job

Venetian Plaster

Traditional Venetian plastering is doable only for skilled craftsmen. The newer variation of this has made it possible for some Californian homeowners to achieve the same result. But don't trust your skill just yet. Plastering is not an ordinary paint job, especially if it's something as special as Venetian plastering.

Overall, it's a tedious process that requires an eye for detail, care, and passion. First, we'll clean the surface, making sure that it's free from anything that will ruin the hardened plaster. This involves peeling the old paint, filling holes, and leveling the area. This preparatory step becomes extra tedious for old houses since most of these have lead paint.

After that, we'll apply the plaster. Most people think that this is as easy as painting the surface. The truth is it is far way more difficult than that. We'll use a trowel and other tools to ensure that the plaster is applied as it's supposed to. More processes will be necessary depending on the specific design you prefer.
